Progress towards the Paris Agreement<\/h3>\n

The \u2018EU for Talanoa\u2019 conference was organised by the European Commission on 13 June 2018 as part of the EU’s contribution to the Talanoa Dialogue, an international process to take stock of the collective and individual efforts towards the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.<\/p>\n

Taking place at the European Commission’s Charlemagne building in Brussels, the event brought together representatives from EU institutions, cities and regions, civil society, the private sector, trade unions and other relevant stakeholders from EU member states and countries outside the EU.<\/p>\n

Speaking at this event, the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Ca\u00f1ete, explained that: \u201cIn line with the vision and the objectives of the Paris Agreement, politicians, stakeholders and citizens around the world are getting together throughout 2018 to discuss: where we are; where we want to go; and how we can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also explained that 2018 will see the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) deliver its special report on 1.5\u00b0C, which will also be an important input to the Talanoa Dialogue, and its political phase involving the ministers at COP24.<\/p>\n

According to the commissioner, three things must be done if Talanoa is to be \u201ca success that relates to the real world and government choices\u201d:<\/p>\n
