This significant investment will support the construction of up to six cutting-edge facilities dedicated to producing clean hydrogen fuel using Plug Power’s proprietary electrolyser technology.

This initiative aligns with US strategy to promote clean energy, foster healthier communities, and boost American economic competitiveness in a global clean energy market.

Clean hydrogen fuel is a cornerstone of the United States’ transition to a sustainable energy future. As a versatile and zero-emission energy carrier, hydrogen has the potential to decarbonise sectors that are traditionally hard to electrify, such as heavy transportation, industrial manufacturing, and aviation.

It can power fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), offering a clean alternative to diesel in freight trucks and public transit. Additionally, hydrogen plays a critical role in industrial processes, such as steel production, by replacing carbon-intensive methods.

Hydrogen’s ability to store renewable energy makes it an essential partner for wind and solar power, ensuring a reliable energy supply even when natural conditions fluctuate.

By integrating clean hydrogen technologies, the US can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and drive innovation. This fuel is not just an environmental solution – it’s a pathway to a robust, resilient, and future-ready energy economy.

The loan guarantee represents a pivotal moment in the US clean hydrogen industry. By funding state-of-the-art facilities, the DOE and Plug Power aim to unlock the full potential of clean hydrogen.

The hydrogen produced will primarily power FCEVs in sectors like material handling, transportation, and industrial operations. Compared to traditional hydrogen production methods that rely on natural gas, this project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 84%.

Companies such as Amazon, Walmart, and Home Depot already utilise Plug’s hydrogen solutions in their warehouses, benefiting from zero-emission operations and faster refuelling times.

At the core of this ambitious project lies Plug Power’s cutting-edge electrolyser technology. Manufactured at the company’s gigafactory in Rochester, NY, these electrolysers use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

By integrating renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, the facilities will produce emissions-free clean hydrogen.

Plug Power’s Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology is designed to handle variable electricity loads, making it highly efficient and adaptable. Modular designs allow for scalable production, ranging from 1 megawatt (MW) to 10 MW systems.

With one MW capable of powering up to 750 American homes, these systems will help establish a resilient clean hydrogen network across the country.

This DOE-backed project will generate significant economic opportunities while combating climate change. During the construction phase, the initiative is expected to create 100-200 jobs per facility, with each location supporting at least 50 full-time positions once operational.

The project also includes a robust Community Benefits Plan (CBP) to engage local communities in siting decisions.

Plug Power is committed to outreach programmes aimed at increasing public awareness of hydrogen’s potential as a sustainable energy solution. Educational resources and interactive initiatives will help foster community involvement and understanding of hydrogen technology.

The DOE’s support for Plug Power is part of a larger strategy to position the United States as a global leader in clean hydrogen.

The agency recently updated its Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Clean Hydrogen report, which highlights significant progress in the industry since its initial release in March 2023.

Transforming the clean hydrogen landscape
