For example, reducing methane emissions requires information from several different satellites, both publicly and privately owned.<\/p>\n<p>CEOS and CGMS Agencies are actively developing and coordinating the satellites, ground systems and standards to meet these needs.<\/p>\n<h3>The role of Earth observation satellites in COP29 negotiations<\/h3>\n<p>COP29 is a crucial global event where nations come together to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/government-and-business-leaders-come-together-to-accelerate-global-climate-action\/52635\/\">discuss and address climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It serves as a platform for countries to negotiate and commit to actions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and take informed action.<\/p>\n<p>Satellite data informs the negotiations by providing trusted information.<\/p>\n<p>The CEOS statement outlines six key areas where satellites have significantly advanced climate knowledge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greenhouse gas measurements: Earth observation satellites have improved the measurement of carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases, helping to detect major methane leaks and supporting global carbon budget estimates.<\/li>\n<li>Land cover and use: Satellites monitor changes in land use, including deforestation, and develop greenhouse gas inventories for countries without historical data on their national forest inventory.<\/li>\n<li>Global temperature trends: Satellites provide comprehensive data on global temperatures, helping to identify long-term trends and regional variations.<\/li>\n<li>Melting polar ice and sea level rise: Satellites track changes in polar ice sheets, glaciers and sea level, for example detecting the alarming losses in Greenland\u2019s ice sheet.<\/li>\n<li>Extreme events: Satellites provide near-continuous monitoring and prediction of extreme weather events like hurricanes, heatwaves, wildfires, floods and droughts.<\/li>\n<li>Ocean Health: Earth observation satellites provide data on ocean conditions such as temperature and salinity, which are essential for understanding the health of marine environments and trends in ocean acidification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CEOS is the international body responsible for coordinating observations of the Earth from space.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-to-chair-global-earth-observation-group-with-bold-ambitions-for-data-uptake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK Space Agency\u2019s role as CEOS
