{"id":51535,"date":"2024-09-30T13:55:35","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T12:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=51535"},"modified":"2024-09-30T13:55:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T12:55:35","slug":"ofqual-poll-highlights-the-value-of-cybersecurity-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/ofqual-poll-highlights-the-value-of-cybersecurity-in-schools\/51535\/","title":{"rendered":"Ofqual poll highlights the value of cybersecurity in schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A new Ofqual poll has highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in schools after it uncovered the risks associated with poor cyber hygiene.<\/h2>\n<p>The prompt comes as a Teacher Tapp survey found that\u00a0one in three secondary teachers did not have cybersecurity training in the last academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Ofqual\u2019s Executive Director of General Qualifications, Amanda Swann, explained: \u201cEvery student&#8217;s nightmare is losing coursework that results from many hours of hard work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven more distressing is losing a whole class or year group\u2019s coursework because of weak cyber security on a school or college IT system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCybersecurity in schools is often taken seriously, but this poll highlights that there is more to be done. I would encourage schools and colleges to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/information\/resources-for-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cyber Security Centre\u2019s school resource guide<\/a> to learn how to defend against cyber-attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Cyber incidents in schools are on the rise<\/h3>\n<p>The poll, which surveyed teachers across England, also found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>34% of schools and colleges in England experienced a cyber incident during the last academic year.<\/li>\n<li>Most commonly, 23% of schools and colleges in England experienced a cyber security incident due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/ai-and-rising-cybersecurity-threats-in-2024\/41718\/\">phishing attack<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The North West was hit hardest, with 40% of schools responding that had had a cyber incident, compared with 28% in the east of England.<\/li>\n<li>20% could not recover immediately, with 4% taking more than half a term to recover.<\/li>\n<li>9% of headteachers said the attack was critically damaging.<\/li>\n<li>One in three teachers have not had cybersecurity training this year \u2014 of the two-thirds who have had training, 66% said it was useful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How the incidents affected schools and students<\/h3>\n<p>Teachers who had experienced cyber incidents in schools were asked how it affected them, their colleagues and students.<\/p>\n<p>One teacher said: \u201cIt happened last summer before results days. From then on, all teaching staff were unable to access anything, so they\u00a0could not prepare for the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in school, we could not use the desktops, and there were not enough laptops. This went on for weeks and was utter chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another teacher commented: \u201cIt caused a dip in belief about the cybersecurity systems in schools and led to difficult conversations with
