{"id":49201,"date":"2024-07-12T10:31:49","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T09:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=49201"},"modified":"2024-07-12T10:31:49","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T09:31:49","slug":"minister-outlines-new-approach-to-uk-science-and-tech-at-g7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/minister-outlines-new-approach-to-uk-science-and-tech-at-g7\/49201\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister outlines new approach to UK science and tech at G7"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Science Minister declared UK science and technology \u201copen for business\u201d as he met counterparts at the G7 Science and Technology Ministerial in Italy.<\/h2>\n<p>The Ministerial underpinned the government\u2019s mission to accelerate innovation, investment and productivity through world-class UK science and tech research across the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has joined international partners in a commitment to boost research security and collaboration on large research infrastructure, biotechnology and key technologies such as AI supported by supercomputing.<\/p>\n<h3>Strengthening ties with international partners<\/h3>\n<p>Representatives from the world\u2019s leading economies also reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine\u2019s scientists in the face of Russia\u2019s illegal invasion and a shared commitment to work with African countries on R&amp;D to support their economic development.<\/p>\n<p>This joint undertaking is part of the government\u2019s plan to strengthen ties with international partners, rebuild the UK\u2019s reputation as a strong, reliable partner, and harness the power of science and technology for global benefit.<\/p>\n<p>The commitments made in Bologna will further allow us to collaborate with international partners and accelerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/investment-in-uk-science-and-technology-returns-closer-to-pre-pandemic-levels\/45782\/\">investments in cutting-edge technologies<\/a>, creating the jobs of the future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nVQ0E2w_Bpc?si=wERvReo-66MD6nEh\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Science Minister Vallance said: \u201cWe work together to ensure data is open and accessible and pool our resources to develop cutting-edge long-term research infrastructure and, above all, stand in solidarity and support researchers who are under threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Driving innovation in UK science and tech<\/h3>\n<p>The Minister suggested that the UK will continue to review the possibility of hosting a new international research facility as part of the global effort to drive innovation through international collaboration in science and tech.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministerial also focused on biotechnology, recognising its importance to the future of the world economy, particularly as AI becomes more widespread, rapidly reshaping what is possible in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The UK is also working closely with other G7 members on computing capacity, such as through the UK\u2019s recent access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/uk-joins-european-supercomputer-scheme-eurohpc\/47403\/\">world-class European supercomputing resources<\/a> through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.<\/p>\n<h3>Managing security threats<\/h3>\n<p>The G7\u2019s focus on research security is an incredibly important step. R&amp;D is the engine that powers sustained economic growth, which ultimately improves prosperity and living standards for all working people.<\/p>\n<p>However, the world is becoming more volatile and insecure, and threats to the research community are growing, too.<\/p>\n<p>The risks posed by theft, misuse, and exploitation of sensitive research are evolving, which is precisely why like-minded allies like the G7 need to set the agenda globally on proportionally managing this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Deep UK science and tech links with this year\u2019s G7 hosts, Italy, exemplify the sort of longstanding international connections the Government wants to reinvigorate and harness to unlock a decade of national renewal.<\/p>\n<p>UK and Italian scientists already work together through the European Space Agency, Horizon Europe and the Square Kilometre Array space telescope project.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the UK\u2019s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and Italy\u2019s Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) celebrate the 40th anniversary of their partnership in pioneering neutron research.<\/p>\n<p>The full list of agreements made at the G7 Ministerial <a
