{"id":43771,"date":"2024-02-15T10:32:56","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T10:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=43771"},"modified":"2024-09-12T12:01:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T11:01:19","slug":"uk-strengthens-collaboration-on-fusion-energy-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/uk-strengthens-collaboration-on-fusion-energy-security\/43771\/","title":{"rendered":"UK strengthens collaboration on fusion energy security"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Following the UK&#8217;s lead, the Energy Security Secretary, Claire Coutinho, met with European allies this week to discuss plans to transition away from Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and strengthen fusion energy security.<\/h2>\n<p>At a ministerial meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, the Secretary of State also signed a landmark new fusion energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-canada-cooperation-on-fusion-energy-memorandum-of-understanding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnership with Canada<\/a>, bringing the UK a step closer to developing a near-limitless source of clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>The Memorandum of Understanding with Canada on fusion energy will seek to improve collaboration on research and development, harmonise the approach to regulation, and develop the workforce and skills base.<\/p>\n<p>This will strengthen cooperation between the UK and Canada to support the deployment of fusion worldwide. It will also support the UK\u2019s \u00a3650m fusion programme, cementing the UK as a world leader in this innovative technology.<\/p>\n<h3>Strategic partnerships will strengthen fusion energy security worldwide<\/h3>\n<p>The energy generated from fusion is many million times more efficient than burning coal, oil or gas and could generate a near unlimited supply of clean electricity \u2013 transforming global efforts to reach net zero and delivering long-term energy independence.<\/p>\n<p>This is the UK\u2019s second formal international fusion collaboration following the announcement of a partnership with the USA in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Energy Security Secretary also met with allies to discuss energy security and how to build on the progress made to date to target Russia\u2019s energy sector, with the UK having led the way in banning all imports of Russian oil and gas after Putin\u2019s illegal invasion.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the UK recently announcing a \u00a3300m investment to become the first country in Europe outside of Russia to launch a high-tech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/uk-announces-300m-haleu-nuclear-fuel-programme\/41590\/\">HALEU nuclear fuel programme<\/a>, driving Russia further out of global energy markets.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho said: \u201cA more diverse and secure energy mix will bring down bills in the long term, and that\u2019s why we are working closely with our European allies to end dependency on Russian gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK is also leading the world in fusion energy security, which could provide a near limitless supply of clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis landmark partnership with Canada will strengthen co-operation between our countries and support our record-breaking British research \u2013 bringing us closer to making fusion a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Other partnerships to accelerate the energy transition<\/h3>\n<p>The UK has provided \u00a3150m for Ukraine\u2019s energy sector since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion and is a key partner in supporting Ukraine to rebuild and transition.<\/p>\n<p>The UK also announced \u00a312m at COP28 for the IEA\u2019s Clean Energy Transition Programme to support developing countries to accelerate their green transitions \u2013 the biggest ever voluntary contribution.<\/p>\n<p>The event in Paris was the first international meeting of energy ministers since
