{"id":41244,"date":"2023-12-18T09:32:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T09:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=41244"},"modified":"2024-09-12T12:02:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T11:02:11","slug":"fusion-energy-development-boosted-with-funding-for-lithium-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/fusion-energy-development-boosted-with-funding-for-lithium-technology\/41244\/","title":{"rendered":"Fusion energy development boosted with funding for lithium technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The University of Manchester has been awarded \u00a31.3m by the UK Atomic Energy Authority for the development of lithium technologies for fusion energy.<\/h2>\n<p>The research will help to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/lithium-supply\/\">lithium<\/a> technology for fusion energy, creating a method to produce enough lithium to make breeder blankets for deuterium-tritium fusion reactors. This allows tritium to be created inside the reactor \u2013 a very scarce resource. Therefore, the challenge of fuelling fusion reactors is overcome.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kathryn George, project lead from The University of Manchester, said: \u201cI am excited to be leading this ambitious, collaborative project to produce the fuel needed to make fusion power a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together a range of skills in chemical engineering and regulation, we will deliver a solution that not only solves the technical problem of fuelling fusion power plants but also ensures that the process will have minimal environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>UKAEA is funding the development of lithium technology for fusion energy<\/h3>\n<p>In early 2023, UKAEA launched the new <a href=\"https:\/\/careers.ukaea.uk\/early-careers\/fusion-industry-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fusion Industry Programme<\/a> challenge, \u2018Realising the potential of lithium in an economic, sustainable and scalable fusion energy fuel-cycle,\u2019 to encourage organisations to develop prototypes of lithium technology.<\/p>\n<p>Five organisations have secured six contracts worth \u00a37.4m in total with UKAEA to develop lithium technology for fusion energy. The organisations received contracts ranging between \u00a3700,000 and \u00a31.5m from UKAEA\u2019s \u2018Fusion Industry Programme.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Tim Bestwick, UKAEA\u2019s Chief Development Officer, said: \u201cFusion energy continues to feature on the world stage, with recent commitments being made at COP28 to develop fusion as a sustainable, low carbon source of energy for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fusion Industry Programme is encouraging the development of UK industrial fusion capacity and preparing the UK fusion industry for the future global fusion power plant market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe organisations that have been awarded these contracts have successfully demonstrated their lithium technology concepts and will now develop them to the \u2018proof of concept\u2019 stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Contracts awarded earlier this year<\/h3>\n<p>The contracts follow the award of Fusion Industry Programme contracts earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The contracts were
