{"id":37690,"date":"2023-09-26T13:14:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T12:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=37690"},"modified":"2023-09-26T13:14:50","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T12:14:50","slug":"battery-research-projects-receive-over-150m-from-european-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/battery-research-projects-receive-over-150m-from-european-union\/37690\/","title":{"rendered":"Battery research projects to receive over \u20ac150m from European Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The European Union\u2019s research initiative, Horizon Europe, has announced \u20ac150m in funding for Battery 2030+ to facilitate sustainable battery research.<\/h2>\n<p>The funding comes after McKinsey forecasted global battery demand to exceed 1,700 GWh in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The investment from the EU signifies a renewed confidence in <a href=\"https:\/\/battery2030.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battery 2030+<\/a>, an initiative coordinated by Uppsala University in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative will undertake sustainable battery research with the aim of making Europe the world leader in the development and production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/innovating-eco-friendly-and-cost-effective-redox-flow-batteries\/34293\/\">green batteries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Battery 2030+ focuses on designing green, efficient, durable, and safe batteries.<\/p>\n<h3>New battery research projects are to be set up<\/h3>\n<p>Under the leadership of Professor Kristina Edstr\u00f6m at Uppsala University, six new battery research projects are coordinated under the CSA.<\/p>\n<p>These projects will focus on the mechanisms for self-healing and electrochemical interfaces, and sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Next year, an additional ten projects are set to start thanks to a funding of around \u20ac60m.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, nine new battery research projects are anticipated with a funding of \u20ac60m. Some of these projects will include applied research areas like production and recycling. Others will be more data science driven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal is to better understand the dynamic processes within the battery to further advance technological growth in this vital field. The EU&#8217;s commitment to sustainable energy solutions is evident in Horizon Europe&#8217;s continued support of these trailblazing projects,\u201d said Professor Edstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n<h3>Projects for sensing and self-healing<\/h3>\n<p>Three of the battery research projects look at sensing and self-healing mechanisms for improved battery reliability and performance.<\/p>\n<p>These projects are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pheonix led by Maitane Berecibar, Vrije universitet i Bryssel (VUB);<\/li>\n<li>Salamander led by Yuxiu Lai at the Institute for Energy Technology in Norway (IFE); and<\/li>\n<li>Healingbat led by Stefan Palzer at Dortmunds Technical University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Complex interfaces will also be explored<\/h3>\n<p>The other three projects will investigate the interfaces between the electrolyte and the electrodes in the battery.<\/p>\n<p>The research projects investigating interfaces are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opera led by Celia Polop at the University Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid (UAM);<\/li>\n<li>Opincharge led by Santhana Eswara at LIST (Luxemburg Institute for Science and Technology); and<\/li>\n<li>Ultrabat led by Martin Meedeom Nielsen at DTU
