{"id":19689,"date":"2022-03-24T08:57:44","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T08:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=19689"},"modified":"2022-03-24T08:57:44","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T08:57:44","slug":"movement-white-dwarfs-mapped-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/movement-white-dwarfs-mapped-scientists\/19689\/","title":{"rendered":"Movement of white dwarfs has been mapped by scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A research team from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lunduniversity.lu.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Lund University<\/a> has mapped the movement of white dwarfs in the Milky Way, revealing information about these perplexing stars.<\/h2>\n<h3>What is a white dwarf?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/scientists-discover-planetary-bodies-habitable-zone-white-dwarf-star\/18195\/\">White dwarfs<\/a> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">were once normal stars<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2 SCXW12849896 BCX9\">similar to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> the Sun<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">however<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">y eventually<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> collapse<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> after exhausting all <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">their fuel.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">White dwarfs have a radius of about 1<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">%<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> of the Sun\u2019s. They have a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">pproximately<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> the same mass, which means they have an astonishing density of about 1 tonne per cubic centimetre. After billions of years, white dwarfs will cool down to a point where they stop emitting visible light<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">transforming <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\">into<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12849896 BCX9\"> so-called black dwarfs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first white dwarf that was discovered was 40 Eridani A. It is a bright celestial body 16.2 light-years from Earth, surrounded by a binary system consisting of the white dwarf 40 Eridani B and the red dwarf 40 Eridani C. Since its discovery in 1783, astronomers have tried to learn more about white dwarfs in order to gain a deeper understanding of the evolutionary history of the Earth in the Milky Way.<\/p>\n<p>These interstellar remnants have historically been difficult to study. However, the data researchers have collected in this recent study, which was published in <em>Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society<\/em>, presents new findings regarding how the collapsed stars move.<\/p>\n<h3>How has the movement of white dwarfs been documented?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThanks to observations from the Gaia Space Telescope, we have, for the first time, managed to reveal the three-dimensional velocity distribution for the largest catalogue of white dwarfs to date. This gives us a detailed picture of their velocity structure with unparalleled detail,\u201d explained Daniel Mikkola, Doctoral Student in Astronomy at Lund University.<\/p>\n<p>The Gaia Space Telescope has allowed researchers to measure positions and velocities for about 1.5 billion stars. However, it has only been recently that have they been able to completely focus on the white dwarfs in the Solar neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have managed to map the white dwarfs&#8217; velocities and movement patterns. Gaia revealed that there are two parallel sequences of white dwarfs when looking at their temperature and brightness. If we study these separately, we can see that they move in different ways, probably as a consequence of them having different masses and lifetimes,\u201d said Mikkola.<\/p>\n<h3>What does this data mean?<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110567557 BCX9\">The results can be u<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110567557 BCX9\">tilise<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110567557 BCX9\">d to develop new simulations and models to continue to map the history and development of the Milky Way. Through an increased knowledge of the white dwarfs, the researchers hope to be able to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110567557 BCX9\">under cover<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2 SCXW110567557 BCX9\">a number of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW110567557 BCX9\"> inquiries surrounding the birth of the Milky Way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study is important because we learned more about the closest regions in our galaxy.
