{"id":17885,"date":"2022-02-07T10:38:38","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T10:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=17885"},"modified":"2022-02-07T10:38:38","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T10:38:38","slug":"demand-for-urgent-coastal-rehabilitation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/demand-for-urgent-coastal-rehabilitation\/17885\/","title":{"rendered":"The demand for urgent coastal rehabilitation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>New research has revealed that only 15% of coastal regions around the world remain intact, encouraging urgent coastal rehabilitation and conservation on a global scale.<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Queensland<\/a>-led an international study, mapping the impact of human-induced pressures on coastal regions, in order to identify those that are already highly degraded, and those that currently remain intact to encourage urgent coastal rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke Williams, from the University of Queensland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sees.uq.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Earth and Environmental Sciences<\/a>, said the findings, which have been compiled into a free and useable dataset, provide valuable insights into humanity\u2019s widespread impacts on Earth\u2019s precious coastal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/the-significance-of-mangroves-and-their-ecosystems\/6383\/\">ecosystems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoastal regions contain high levels of biodiversity and are relied upon by millions of people for ecosystem services such as food and storm protection,\u201d Williams explained.<\/p>\n<h3>The need for urgent coastal rehabilitation<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOur results show that we need to act quickly and decisively if we hope to conserve those coastal regions that remain intact, and restore those that are heavily degraded, especially if we\u2019re going to mitigate the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rate at which these regions are degrading poses massive threats to not only coastal species and habitats, but also to the health, safety, and economic security of countless people who live or rely on coastal regions around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research team discovered that of the 15.5% of coastal areas that remain intact as of 2013, Canada was responsible for the largest expanse of coastal region that stood intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther large expanses are located in Russia, Greenland, Chile, Australia, and the United States,\u201d Williams commented. \u201cCoastal regions containing seagrasses, savannah, and coral reefs had the highest levels of human pressure compared to other coastal ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Next steps<\/h3>\n<p>University of Queensland\u2019s Amelia Wenger, a collaborator of the research, said that the collaborative research approach, which involved looking at two datasets \u2013 one, which focused on human impacts on land, and the other which observed human impacts from a marine perspective \u2013 offered a clear vision about what the next steps should be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we already knew how important it is to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services in these coastal regions, being able to clearly see how rapidly and how far this degradation has spread, is truly eye-opening,\u201d Dr Wenger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding why coastal ecosystems are under pressure can help us design and implement more targeted management strategies, and hopefully slow this degradation down and even turn it around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are urging governments and custodians of these environments to proactively conserve the valuable remaining intact coastal regions that they are responsible for, while restoring those that are degraded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think our dataset will be a vital tool in achieving that ambition, which is why we are making it publicly available and free to use.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research has revealed that only 15% of coastal regions around the world remain intact, encouraging urgent coastal rehabilitation and conservation on a global scale.
