{"id":17313,"date":"2022-01-21T13:31:50","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T13:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/?p=17313"},"modified":"2022-01-21T13:31:50","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T13:31:50","slug":"cybersecurity-laws-reinforce-uks-resilience-cyber-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/cybersecurity-laws-reinforce-uks-resilience-cyber-attacks\/17313\/","title":{"rendered":"Cybersecurity laws\u00a0to reinforce\u00a0UK\u2019s resilience against cyber-attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The government is consulting on introducing new laws to strengthen the UK\u2019s resistance against possible cyber-attacks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As cyber-attacks have increased in recent years, new cybersecurity laws are necessary\u00a0in order to\u00a0drive up security standards in outsourced IT services used by\u00a0the majority of\u00a0businesses in the UK.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On 19 January 2022,\u00a0a number of\u00a0proposals were published to enhance cybersecurity efforts, including making improvements to the processes used by organisations when reporting cybersecurity incidents and restructuring legislation to ensure it is more flexible and can respond to the speed of technological change.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Introducing new cybersecurity laws<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukcybersecuritycouncil.org.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UK Cyber Security Council<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0which is responsible for managing\u00a0the cyber security profession, also\u00a0requires\u00a0powers to raise the bar and\u00a0develop\u00a0a set of agreed qualifications and\u00a0certifications\u00a0.\u00a0This means that\u00a0those working in\u00a0the cybersecurity field\u00a0can\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0that\u00a0they are\u00a0appropriately\u00a0prepared\u00a0to protect businesses online.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These new plans come\u00a0in the light of\u00a0a\u00a0series of\u00a0high-profile cyber incidents, like\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/exploring-threat-cyberattacks-businesses\/15355\/\">cyber-attack<\/a>\u00a0on SolarWinds and on Microsoft Exchange Servers,\u00a0which\u00a0exposed\u00a0weaknesses\u00a0in the third-party products and services\u00a0employed\u00a0by businesses can be\u00a0capitalised on\u00a0by cybercriminals and hostile states,\u00a0impacting\u00a0hundreds of thousands of organisations\u00a0simultaneously.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As well as this, the proposed plans\u00a0follow a\u00a0growth\u00a0in\u00a0the amount of\u00a0ransomware threats to organisations,\u00a0such as\u00a0those\u00a0in critical national infrastructure\u00a0like\u00a0the Colonial Pipeline\u00a0incident\u00a0in the US.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Safeguarding against cyber-attacks<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister of State for Media, Data, and Digital Infrastructure, Julia Lopez, said:\u00a0\u201cCyber-attacks\u00a0are often made possible because criminals and hostile states cynically exploit vulnerabilities in businesses\u2019 digital supply chains and outsourced IT services that could be fixed or patched.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe plans we are announcing today will help protect essential services and our wider economy from cyber threats<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEvery UK organisation must take their cyber resilience seriously as we strive to grow, innovate and protect people online. order to\u00a0safeguard the UK\u00a0and\u00a0assist\u00a0in\u00a0preventing\u00a0these attacks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through these new cybersecurity laws,\u00a0the government is aiming\u00a0to take a\u00a0tougher\u00a0approach to getting at-risk businesses to\u00a0enhance\u00a0their cyber resilience as part of its new \u00a32.6bn\u00a0National Cyber Strategy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations came into\u00a0play in\u00a02018 to\u00a0strengthen\u00a0the cybersecurity of companies\u00a0that\u00a0offer\u00a0crucial\u00a0services\u00a0like\u00a0water, energy, transport,\u00a0healthcare\u00a0and digital infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The NIS regulations\u00a0necessitate\u00a0these\u00a0service providers to\u00a0carry out\u00a0risk assessments and put in place reasonable and\u00a0proportional\u00a0security measures to\u00a0safeguard\u00a0their network.\u00a0On top of this, they must\u00a0report\u00a0substantial\u00a0incidents and have plans\u00a0in place\u00a0to\u00a0guarantee\u00a0they\u00a0promptly\u00a0recover\u00a0from them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the\u00a0policies\u00a0are relevant\u00a0to some digital services,\u00a0including\u00a0online marketplaces\u00a0and\u00a0search engines,\u00a0there has been\u00a0a\u00a0growth\u00a0in the\u00a0utilisation\u00a0and\u00a0reliance\u00a0on digital services for\u00a0delivering\u00a0on\u00a0corporate\u00a0demands\u00a0like\u00a0information storage, data processing and running software.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">NCSC Technical Director Dr Ian Levy\u00a0commented:\u00a0\u201cI welcome these proposed updates to the NIS regulations, which will help to enhance the UK\u2019s overall cyber security resilience.<\/span><span
