New research\u00a0reports a value for the Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime\u00a0and has a small enough uncertainty to confirm\u00a0that the particle has a\u00a0short\u00a0lifetime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Collaborative research has\u00a0come to the conclusion\u00a0that the Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime is obscenely short. Once the Higgs boson has been generated during a particle collision, it lives on for less than\u00a0a trillionth of a billionth of a second or,\u00a0specifically, 1.6 x 10<\/span>-22<\/span>\u00a0seconds.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Until now,\u00a0experiments have only been able to\u00a0determine\u00a0the value\u00a0Higgs boson\u2019s\u00a0lifetime\u00a0or\u00a0determine\u00a0this\u00a0property with a large uncertainty.\u00a0Now, in this novel study, the CMS<\/a> collaboration\u00a0has recorded\u00a0a value for the particle\u2019s lifetime that has a small enough uncertainty to\u00a0validate\u00a0that the Higgs boson does have such a short lifetime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Possible advancements from measuring Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Successfully measuring the Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime has been high on the\u00a0priority list for particle physicists as with an accurate experimental value of the lifetime, research would be better able to comprehend the full nature of the particle.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as this, it would allow particle physicists to determine\u00a0whether or not\u00a0the value matches the value predicated by the Standard Model of particle physics.\u00a0A deviation from the prediction could point to new particles or forces not predicted by the Model,\u00a0such as\u00a0new particles into which the Higgs boson would decay.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overcoming experimental difficulties\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

However, it was not an easy task to determine the Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime. Firstly, the predicted lifetime is too brief to be calculated directly. A solution to this came in the form of measuring a related property called the mass width, which is inversely proportional to the lifetime and represents the small range of possible masses around the particle\u2019s nominal mass of 125 GeV. However, this too was not an easy task, as the predicted mass width of the Higgs boson was too small to be easily measured by experiments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The researchers were able to overcome this challenge with the help of quantum physics.\u00a0In addition to being\u00a0created\u00a0with a mass equal or close to its nominal value, a short-lived particle\u00a0like\u00a0the Higgs boson can also be\u00a0generated\u00a0with a much larger mass than the nominal value,\u00a0though\u00a0the odds of this happening are lower.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This effect \u2013 and in fact the mass width of the particle as well \u2013 is a manifestation of a quantum quirk known as Heisenberg\u2019s uncertainty principle.\u00a0On top of this, a\u00a0comparison between the production rate of these large-mass, or \u201coff-shell\u201d, Higgs bosons with that of the nominal or close to nominal, or \u201con-shell\u201d, Higgs bosons can be\u00a0utilised\u00a0to extract the Higgs boson\u2019s mass width and therefore its lifetime.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research conclusions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

By\u00a0examining\u00a0data collected by the CMS experiment during the second run of the Large Hadron Collider<\/a> (LHC), specifically data on Higgs bosons transforming into two Z bosons, which themselves transform into four charged leptons or two charged leptons plus two neutrinos, the CMS\u00a0team has\u00a0attained\u00a0the first-ever evidence\u00a0for the production of\u00a0off-shell Higgs bosons. From this result, which has only a 1 in 1000 chance of being a statistical fluke.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The\u00a0researchers\u00a0obtained a Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime of 2.1 x 10-22 seconds, with an upper\/lower uncertainty of (+2.3\/-0.9) x 10<\/span>-22<\/span>\u00a0seconds. This value, the most precise\u00a0value ever attained,\u00a0supports\u00a0the Standard Model prediction and\u00a0verifies\u00a0that the particle does have a tiny lifespan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur result demonstrates that off-shell Higgs-boson production offers an excellent way to measure the Higgs boson\u2019s lifetime,\u201d\u00a0explained\u00a0CMS physicist Pascal\u00a0Vanlaer. \u201cAnd it sets a milestone in the study of the properties of this unique particle. The precision of the measurement is expected to improve in the coming years with data from the next LHC runs and new analysis ideas.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
