Highlighting a way forward for space debris removal, Astroscale\u2019s End-of-Life Services by Astroscale demonstration (ELSA-d) effectively tested its capacity to capture its client spacecraft utilising the servicer\u2019s magnetic capture system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the main obstacles standing in the way of efficient space debris removal, as well as on-orbit servicing, is the ability to dock with or capture the client object. The latest test demonstration by\u00a0Astroscale\u2019s\u00a0ELSA-d<\/a>\u00a0effectively corroborates the ability to\u00a0dock with a client,\u00a0like\u00a0a defunct satellite.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Demonstrating the\u00a0magnetic capture system<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When ELSA-d was\u00a0first\u00a0launched and\u00a0authorised, a locking mechanism held\u00a0together\u00a0its servicer and client spacecraft<\/a>. The\u00a0initial\u00a0stage\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0demonstration was to unlock this mechanism.\u00a0After the mechanism was\u00a0unlocked, the magnetic capture system held the client to the servicer\u00a0on its own,\u00a0setting up\u00a0ELSA-d to\u00a0continually\u00a0acquire\u00a0and release the client in demonstrations\u00a0going forward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The client was then split up from the servicer for the first time and captured to vindicate the magnetic capture system. Throughout the duration of the release and capture period, the team at the Mission Operations and Ground Segment at Astroscale tested out and regulated the rendezvous sensors and verified relevant ground system infrastructure and operational procedures. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Towards space debris removal<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The effective conclusion of this stage sets the tone for Astroscale\u2019s future groundbreaking demonstrations of space debris removal. The Engineering and Mission Control teams are in the midst of their preparation for \u2018capture without tumbling\u2019, whereby the client will be detached at a larger distance, and the technique of rendezvous and docking will depend on an amalgamation of on-board self-sufficient software and advanced ground processing of telemetry and commands. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This demonstration is\u00a0anticipated\u00a0to be\u00a0achieved\u00a0in the coming months and will be\u00a0superseded\u00a0by the\u00a0\u2018capture with tumbling\u2019\u00a0stage,\u00a0whereby\u00a0the client will\u00a0replicate\u00a0an uncontrolled,\u00a0descending\u00a0space object.\u00a0It will end with a\u00a0capture demonstration\u00a0known as\u00a0a \u2018diagnosis and client search,\u2019\u00a0wherein\u00a0the servicer will\u00a0examine\u00a0the client, withdraw to simulate a\u00a0further distance\u00a0search, then approach and recapture the client.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
