New technology for inexpensive thermal-imaging sensors that function at temperatures as high as\u00a0100\u00b0C\u00a0have been developed for applications such as smartphones and autonomous vehicles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Recently, thermal-imaging sensors that identify and capture heat signature images of objects such as human bodies have been utilised in thermostats to check facial temperatures in contactless efforts to check for COVID-19.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of this increase <\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>popularity, the smartphone industry is contemplating the addition of sensors as portable features to establish the add-on function of measuring temperature in\u00a0<\/span>real<\/span>–<\/span>time.\u00a0As well as this, the\u00a0addition\u00a0of\u00a0this\u00a0technology to autonomous vehicles\u00a0could\u00a0enable\u00a0safer autonomous driving.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overcoming current thermal-imaging sensor challenges<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A\u00a0group of researchers led by\u00a0Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Won Jun Choi at the\u00a0Center\u00a0for Opto-Electronic Materials and Devices in the Korea Institute of Science and Technology<\/a> (KIST) has publicised the\u00a0advancement\u00a0of a thermal-imaging sensor that incapacitates the\u00a0current difficulties\u00a0of price and operating-temperature restrictions through convergence research with the team of Prof<\/span>essor<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Jeong\u00a0Min\u00a0Baik\u00a0from Sungkyunkwan University<\/a> (SKKU).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sensor they have created as part of the study can function at temperatures of up to\u00a0100\u00b0C\u00a0without the need for a cooling device. It is also anticipated to be much more affordable than conventional sensors, which could therefore lead to the application of this technology in smartphones and autonomous vehicles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Integrating the technology with existing hardware<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In order to combine the new\u00a0<\/span>technol<\/span>og<\/span>y\u00a0<\/span>with the hardware of smartphones\u00a0and autonomous vehicles, the sensors must be able to steadily function\u00a0at temperatures of\u00a085\u00b0C and 125\u00b0C, respectively,\u00a0without any complications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For standard thermal-imaging sensors to reach these specifications, an independent cooling device is necessitated. However, high-end cooling devices that guarantee quality have a price tag of over two million Korean won attached, and even then, these devices do not make the sensor appropriate for function at temperatures as high as 85\u00b0C. As a result, <\/span>conventional thermal-imaging sensors have not\u00a0yet\u00a0been\u00a0utilised\u00a0in these fields.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, the joint research team from\u00a0KIST and SKKU\u00a0have created a device that uses\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>vanadium dioxide\u00a0and has proven to be stable at\u00a0100\u00b0C. The\u00a0device identifies and converts the infrared light produced by heat into electrical signals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consequently, this\u00a0removes the\u00a0necessity\u00a0for cooling devices, which\u00a0currently\u00a0account for over 10% of the cost of thermal-imaging sensors and\u00a0require massive quantities\u00a0of electricity. The device was able to achieve the same level of infrared signals at 100\u00b0C as at room temperature.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of this, as a result of fabricating and applying an infrared absorber that can absorb as much external infrared light as possible, heat signatures were found with three times more sensitivity and converted into electrical signals. The device indicates approximately three milliseconds of response time even at 100\u00b0C, which is around three to four times faster than traditional ones. Such high response speeds allow the device to capture thermal images at 100 frames per second, which exceeds the conventional level of 30-40 frames per second, thus making it a potential candidate for autonomous vehicles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Choi of the KIST\u00a0explained:\u00a0“By means of our work with convergence research in this study, we have developed a technology that could dramatically reduce the production cost of thermal-imaging sensors. Our device, when compared to more conventional ones, has superior responsivity and operating speed. We expect this to accelerate the use of thermal-imaging sensors in the military supply, smartphone, and autonomous vehicle industries.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
