The Centre will support the UK in achieving its\u00a0bold climate change targets,\u00a0such as\u00a0attaining \u2018net zero\u2019 carbon emissions by 2050 and\u00a0a\u00a0halt to the selling of petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Innovation in battery development<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This pioneering facility can be utilised by any organisation developing batteries for applications such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/united-lithium-ensuring-europes-supply-chain-for-electric-vehicles\/12094\/\">electric vehicles<\/a>,\u00a0rail, aerospace, industrial and domestic\u00a0equipment\u00a0and static energy storage. It was an honour to open this world-class facility today and I cannot think of a more fitting backdrop here in Coventry to speak about the government\u2019s ambitious agenda to level up across the UK.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis facility will help to deliver green growth and jobs as industrial demand accelerates in the UK battery sector. Completed at deliberate speed during the pandemic, UKBIC is a key part of the UK Government\u2019s Faraday Battery Challenge, created to fast track the commercialisation of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, low-weight and recyclable batteries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe battery manufacturing equipment installed covers the whole production process from electrode manufacturing, cylindrical and pouch cell assembly, to formation ag<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing and testing and battery modules and packs.\u00a0 The facility is also a training centre to upskill the UK battery sector.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe importance of the battery sector to the UK economy cannot be underestimated. The Faraday Institution believes that the equivalent of seven large\u00a0gigafactories\u00a0will be needed in the UK and employment in the automotive industry and battery supply chain could grow from 170,000 to 220,000 by 2040.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs we all look to recover from the impact of Coronavirus, we have the opportunity to help make the UK a global leader in batteries, with UKBIC and the Faraday Institution supporting the UK battery industry to become world leaders.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As well as receiving funding from the Faraday Battery Challenge through UK Research and Innovation, UKBIC is partially funded through the\u00a0West Midlands Combined Authority. The highly coordinated challenge has a targeted \u00a3330 million programme of investment ranging from the creation of a battery \u2018Science Superpower\u2019 in the Faraday Institution to scaling high-technology, high growth business and now to providing a world-class industrialisation capability.
